Bangla Grammar

The Bangla grammar allows you to manipulate the vocabulary to obtain multiple forms of a word. The grammatical rules below are the most important in Bangla and help connect words or shape the structure. We start with the prepositions:

And: এবং  [ēbaṁ]	Under: নিচে  [nicē]
Before: পূর্বে  [pūrbē]	After: পরে  [parē]
Inside: ভিতরে  [bhitarē]	Outside: বাইরে  [bā'irē]
With: সঙ্গে  [saṅgē]	But: কিন্তু  [kintu]
For: জন্য  [jan'ya]	From: হইতে  [ha'itē]
To: প্রতি,-তে  [prati, - tē]	In: মধ্যে  [madhyē]

Questions and Adverbs

To ask questions, use the following:

What?: কি?  [ki?]	Who?: কে?  [kē?]
How?: কিভাবে?  [kibhābē?]	Why?: কেন?  [kēna?]
Where?: কোথায়?  [kōthāẏa?]

Some of the most important time adverbs:

Never: কখনো না  [kakhanō nā]	Rarely: কালেভদ্রে  [kālēbhadrē]
Sometimes: মাঝে মাঝে  [mājhē mājhē]	Usually: সাধারণত  [sādhāraṇata]
Always: সর্বদা  [sarbadā]	Very: খুব  [khuba]

Most commonly used pronouns in Bangla:

I: আমি  [āmi]	You: তুমি  [tumi]
He: সে  [sē]	She: সে  [sē]
We: আমরা  [āmarā]	They: তারা  [tārā]

To express the possession of something [possessive form]:

My: আমার  [āmāra]	Your: তোমার  [tōmāra]
His: তার  [tāra]	Her: তার  [tāra]
Our: আমাদের  [āmādēra]	Their: তাদের  [tādēra]

Grammar in a sentence

Some random verbs to show how it's being used:

I speak English: আমি ইংরাজিতে কথা বলি  [āmi inrājitē kathā bali]

You speak French: আপনি ফরাসিতে কথা বলেন  [āpani pharāsitē kathā balēna]

He speaks German: তিনি জার্মান ভাষায কথা বলেন  [tini jārmāna bhāṣāya kathā balēna]

She speaks Italian: সে ইতালিয় ভাষায় কথা বলে  [sē itāliẏa bhāṣāẏa kathā balē]

I visited France: আমি ফ্রান্সে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলাম  [āmi phrānsē bēṛātē giẏēchilāma]

I will drink milk: আমি দুধ পান করবো  [āmi dudha pāna karabō]

Some extra grammatical structures:

I understand you: আমি আপনাকে বুঝি  [āmi āpanākē bujhi]

I don't understand you: আমি আপনাকে বুঝিনা   [āmi āpanākē bujhinā]

I don't speak French: আমি ফরাসি বলতে পারি না৷  [āmi pharāsi balatē pāri nā.]

This is my house: এই হল আমার বাড়ি  [ē'i hala āmāra bāṛi]

That restaurant is far: ওই রেস্টুরেন্টটি দূরে  [ō'i rēsṭurēnṭaṭi dūrē]

No problem: কোন সমস্যা নয  [kōna samasyā naya]
