Marathi Grammar

The Marathi grammar allows you to manipulate the vocabulary to obtain multiple forms of a word. The grammatical rules below are the most important in Marathi and help connect words or shape the structure. We start with the prepositions:

And: आणि  [aani] Audio Under: खाली  [khaali] Audio
Before: आधी  [aadhi] Audio After: नंतर   [nntr] Audio
Inside: आतल्या बाजूला  [aatlyaa baajulaa] Audio Outside: बाहेरच्या बाजूला  [baaherkyaa baajulaa] Audio
With: सोबत  [sobt] Audio But: पण, परंतु  [pn, prntu] Audio
For: साठी  [saathi] Audio From: पासून  [paasun] Audio
To: कडे  [kde] Audio In: आत  [aat] Audio

Questions and Adverbs

To ask questions, use the following:

What?: काय?  [kaay?] Audio Who?: कोण?  [kon?] Audio
How?: कसे?  [kse?] Audio Why?: का?  [kaa?] Audio
Where?: कुठे?  [kuthe?] Audio

Some of the most important time adverbs:

Never: कधीच नाही  [kdhik naahi] Audio Rarely: क्वचित  [kvkit] Audio
Sometimes: कधीकधी  [kdhikdhi] Audio Usually: सामान्यत:  [saamaanyt:] Audio
Always: नेहमी  [nehmi] Audio Very: अत्यंत  [atynt] Audio

Most commonly used pronouns in Marathi:

I: मी  [mi] Audio You: तू / तुम्ही  [tu / tumhi] Audio
He: तो  [to] Audio She: ती  [ti] Audio
We: आम्ही / आपण  [aamhi / aapn] Audio They: ते, त्या, ती  [te, tyaa, ti] Audio

To express the possession of something [possessive form]:

My: माझा, माझे, माझी  [maajhaa, maajhe, maajhi] Audio Your: तुझा,तुझी, तुझे, तुमचे, तुमची, तुमचा  [tujhaa,tujhi, tujhe, tumke, tumki, tumkaa] Audio
His: त्याचे, त्याचा, त्याची  [tyaake, tyaakaa, tyaaki] Audio Her: तिचा, तिचे, तिची  [tikaa, tike, tiki] Audio
Our: आमचे, आमचा, आमची, आपले, आपला, आपली  [aamke, aamkaa, aamki, aaple, aaplaa, aapli] Audio Their: त्यांचे, त्यांचा, त्यांची  [tyaanke, tyaankaa, tyaanki] Audio

Grammar in a sentence

Some random verbs to show how it's being used:

I speak English: मी इंग्रजी बोलतो  [mi ingarji bolto] Audio
You speak French: तुम्ही फ्रेन्च बोलता  [tumhi frenk boltaa] Audio
He speaks German: तो जर्मन बोलतो  [to jrmn bolto] Audio
She speaks Italian: ती इटालियन बोलते  [ti itaaliyn bolte] Audio
I visited France: मी फ्रान्सला भेट दिली   [mi fraanslaa bhet dili] Audio
I will drink milk: मी दूध पिईन  [mi dudh piin] Audio

Some extra grammatical structures:

I understand you: तुम्ही काय म्हणता ते मला समजते  [tumhi maajhyaasobt yeoo shkaal kaay?] Audio
I don't understand you: तुम्ही काय म्हणता ते मला समजत नाही  [tumhi kaay mhntaa te mlaa smjt naahi] Audio
I don't speak French: मला फ्रेन्च बोलता येत नाही  [mlaa frenk boltaa yet naahi] Audio
This is my house: हे माझे घर आहे  [he maajhe ghr aahe] Audio
That restaurant is far: ते उपाहारगृह दूर आहे  [te upaahaargarih dur aahe] Audio
No problem: कांही हरकत नाही  [kaanhi hrkt naahi] Audio
