Your first Georgian conversation: questions, replies and recovery phrases

A useful first conversation in Georgian needs more than a memorised opening. You also need to recognise the other person’s turn, choose a reply and ask for help when a line is unfamiliar. This guide turns a small set of course expressions into a practice session you can repeat. Aim to choose a suitable line from memory; speed can come later.

Choose a line for the moment

The course gives რა გქვია? for “What is your name?” and სასიამოვნოა თქვენი გაცნობა for “Nice to meet you”. Those are different jobs in an exchange: read the English cue first, decide what you want to do, and only then choose the expression. Avoid memorising the table as one uninterrupted speech.

Use or meaningCourse example
What is your name?რა გქვია?
Nice to meet youსასიამოვნოა თქვენი გაცნობა
How are you?როგორ ბრძანდებით?
I'm good, thanksგმადლობთ, კარგად!
And you?და თქვენ?

Keep როგორ ბრძანდებით? and გმადლობთ, კარგად! on separate cards. One cue asks about the other person; the other gives the course’s reply about how you are. Practise recognising which turn each belongs to before trying to answer quickly. These supplied phrases may use different levels of familiarity, so learn each complete entry and its context instead of swapping pieces between them.

Give yourself a way to pause

Your recovery line for this session is ვერ გავიგე!, labelled “I don't understand”. It deserves its own rehearsal: look away from the screen and retrieve it after an unrelated question. A recovery phrase is useful only if you can find it when the conversation stops matching your prepared script.

Use or meaningCourse example
I don't understandვერ გავიგე!
What do you mean?რას გულისხმობ?
I don't knowარ ვიცი!
Sorryმაპატიეთ!

The Georgian characters in გმადლობთ, კარგად! make this a reading exercise as well as a memory exercise. Compare one small section at a time, including marks above or below the main letters. A rough visual resemblance is not enough: return to the course’s letters page when two forms look similar. Keep your first copy beside the original for checking.

Practise choosing, then recalling

Without looking up, find the line for “What is your name?”. Check both the meaning and the written form before moving on.

Reveal the answer

რა გქვია?

Now imagine that you need to say “I don't understand”. Which complete course expression would you retrieve?

Reveal the answer

ვერ გავიგე!

Repeat the activity with a partner or by recording your own cue and response. Leave a pause after the cue instead of reading the answer immediately. On the next pass, change the order of the situations. This separates remembering a phrase from simply remembering its position on the page.

Make a small conversation notebook

  • Write a situation on the front of each card, such as asking a person’s name or admitting you did not understand.
  • Put one complete expression on the back, with the source’s notes and alternatives. Leave room to record a speaker’s correction.
  • Review the cards you hesitated over in a later session. Add another expression when the current set is easy to retrieve.

Continue with the full Georgian phrases lesson for more situations. For now, a short exchange you understand is a better practice target than a long script whose individual lines you cannot choose independently.
