Mandarin Grammar

The Mandarin grammar allows you to manipulate the vocabulary to obtain multiple forms of a word. The grammatical rules below are the most important in Mandarin and help connect words or shape the structure. We start with the prepositions:

And:   [hé] Audio Under: 在...下  [zài...xià] Audio
Before: 在...前  [zài...qián] Audio After: 在 ...后  [zài ...hòu] Audio
Inside: 在…里面  [zài... lǐ miàn] Audio Outside:   [wài] Audio
With: 和…在一起  [hé... zài yī qǐ] Audio But: 但是  [dàn shì] Audio
For: 为了  [wèi le] Audio From: 从…起  [cōng...qǐ] Audio
To:   [zhì] Audio In: 在…里  [zài...lǐ] Audio

Questions and Adverbs

To ask questions, use the following:

What?: 什么?  [shén mē?] Audio Who?: 谁?  [shuí?] Audio
How?: 怎么样?  [zěn me yàng?] Audio Why?: 为什么?  [wèi shén me?] Audio
Where?: 哪里?  [nǎ lǐ?] Audio

Some of the most important time adverbs:

Never: 从不  [cóng bù] Audio Rarely: 很少  [hěn shǎo] Audio
Sometimes: 有时  [yǒu shí] Audio Usually: 通常  [tōng cháng] Audio
Always: 总是  [zǒng shì] Audio Very:   [hěn] Audio

Most commonly used pronouns in Mandarin:

I:   [wǒ] Audio You:   [nǐ] Audio
He:   [tā] Audio She:   [tā] Audio
We: 我们  [wǒ men] Audio They: 他们  [tā men] Audio

To express the possession of something [possessive form]:

My: 我的  [wǒ de] Audio Your: 您的  [nín de] Audio
His: 他的  [tā de] Audio Her: 她的  [tā de] Audio
Our: 我们的  [wǒ men de] Audio Their: 他们的  [tā men de] Audio

Grammar in a sentence

Some random verbs to show how it's being used:

I speak English: 我讲英文  [wǒ jiǎng yīng wén] Audio
You speak French: 你讲法语  [nǐ jiǎng fǎ yǔ] Audio
He speaks German: 他说德语  [tā shuō;shuì dé yǔ] Audio
She speaks Italian: 她讲意大利语  [tā jiǎng yì dà lì yǔ] Audio
I visited France: 我访问了法国  [wǒ fǎng wèn le fǎ guó] Audio
I will drink milk: 我会喝牛奶  [wǒ huì hē niú nǎi] Audio

Some extra grammatical structures:

I understand you: 我理解你  [wǒ lǐ jiě nǐ] Audio
I don't understand you: 我不明白你  [wǒ bù míng bái nǐ] Audio
I don't speak French: 我不会说法语  [wǒ bù huì shuō fǎ yǔ] Audio
This is my house: 这是我的家  [zhè shì wǒ de jiā] Audio
That restaurant is far: 那个餐厅远  [nà gè cān tīng yuǎn] Audio
No problem: 没有问题的  [méi yǒu wèn tí de] Audio
