Kurdish Grammar

The Kurdish grammar allows you to manipulate the vocabulary to obtain multiple forms of a word. The grammatical rules below are the most important in Kurdish and help connect words or shape the structure. We start with the prepositions:

And: وە هەروەها  [we herweha] Audio Under: له ‌ژێر  [le zher] Audio
Before: پێش  [pesh] Audio After: پاش  [pash] Audio
Inside: له‌ ناو  [le naw] Audio Outside: له‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌  [le derewe] Audio
With: له‌گه‌ڵ  [legel] Audio But: به‌ڵام  [belam] Audio
For: بۆ  [bo] Audio From: له‌  [le] Audio
To: تا  [ta] Audio In: له‌  [le] Audio

Questions and Adverbs

To ask questions, use the following:

What?: چی؟  [chy?] Audio Who?: کێ؟  [ke?] Audio
How?: چۆن؟  [chon?] Audio Why?: بۆچی؟  [bochy?] Audio
Where?: لە کوێ؟  [le kwe?] Audio

Some of the most important time adverbs:

Never: هه‌رگیز  [hargeez] Audio Rarely: به‌ ئه‌سته‌م  [be astem] Audio
Sometimes: جاربه‌جار  [jarbejar] Audio Usually: زۆربه‌ی کات  [zorbey kat] Audio
Always: هه‌میشه‌  [hemeeshe] Audio Very: زۆر  [zor ] Audio

Most commonly used pronouns in Kurdish:

I: من  [mn] Audio You: تۆ  [to] Audio
He: ئەو (بۆ کوڕ)  [aw (for boys)] Audio She: ئەو (بۆ کچ)  [aw (for girls)] Audio
We: ئێمه‌  [eme] Audio They: ئه‌وان  [awan] Audio

To express the possession of something [possessive form]:

My:   [m] Audio Your:   [t] Audio
His:   [y] Audio Her:   [y] Audio
Our: -مان  [man] Audio Their: -یان  [yan] Audio

Grammar in a sentence

Some random verbs to show how it's being used:

I speak English: من بە ئینگلیزی قسە دەکەم  [mn be englizy qse dekem] Audio
You speak French: تۆ بە فەرەنسی قسە دەکەیت  [to be ferensy qse dekeyt] Audio
He speaks German: ئەو بە ئەڵمانی قسە دەکات  [aw be almany qse dekat] Audio
She speaks Italian: ئەو بە ئیتالی قسە دەکات  [aw be etaly qse dekat] Audio
I visited France: من سەردانی فەرەنسام کرد  [mn serdany ferensam krd] Audio
I will drink milk: من شیر دەخۆمەوە  [mn sheer dekhomewe] Audio

Some extra grammatical structures:

I understand you: من لێت تێ دەگەم  [mn let te degem] Audio
I don't understand you: من لێت تێ ناگەم  [mn let te nagem] Audio
I don't speak French: من بە فەرەنسی قسە ناکەم  [mn be ferensy qse nakem] Audio
This is my house: ئەمە ماڵی منە  [ame maly mne] Audio
That restaurant is far: ئەو چێشتخانەیە دوورە  [aw cheshtkhaneye dwre] Audio
No problem: کێشە نییە  [keshe nya] Audio
